British Values

democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

The five fundamental British values are democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values are considered the cornerstones of a modern and diverse Britain and are promoted in schools and other public institutions to help foster a sense of community and citizenship.

  • Democracy: A belief in a society where the public can influence decisions and have an equal chance to participate in the democratic process.
  • The rule of law: The principle that everyone, including public institutions, is subject to the same laws and that these laws protect everyone's rights and ensure a safe society.
  • Individual liberty: The freedom to make your own choices and have personal rights, as long as they are within the protection of the law.
  • Mutual respect: Treating others with dignity, regardless of their background or circumstances.
  • Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs: Understanding and respecting that people have different values, beliefs, and cultural heritage, and not imposing your own on others.
